Inspired by burlesque fashion and her other interests, Lauren
enjoys creating individual characters, that each represents an aspect of the
person that she thinks she is or aspires to be. Her work tries to mix the fantasy
world of her imagination with the mundane of real life (such as strawberries
and coffee cups).
Lauren always tries to use a diverse colour pallet, both in her work and herself,
from executive Goth, rock chick, fairytale princess and beyond.
Lauren’s eclectic tastes are inspired by many sources, from Hollywood
bogie-man Tim Burton, to Classic Walt Disney Animation, and other modern artists
such as Joe Linsner, Amy Brown and Brian Froud. Her decorative and Illustrative
style is highly influenced by Alfons Much from the Art Nouveau Period.
The exaggerated characterization within the films of Tim Burton influence her
own character designs whilst the sensibilities of Disney’s animated characters
keep the designs from becoming too twisted. Lauren enjoys the friendly aspects
of her characters and would not wish to lose their innocence. She feels that
the whimsy of the fairytales helps to counteract the macabre fantasy to create
something unique. Ultimately this allows Lauren to add her own style, and good
nature into the fantasy world that her peers currently play in. Another finished
fairy is another character ready to join its friends. Each new character is
christened with a private joke, or double meaning to add to their personality.
Lauren is fan of name magic and etymology.
Working in both 2D and 3D dependant on the subject, Lauren tries to bring all
aspects of her life together into her pieces so that it can be bright, whimsical
with a strong femininity, while bringing together a pastiche of ideas.
On a personal note
Lauren has spent most of her life living in Halifax apart from three years spent
studying for a BA (Hons) in Illustration at the University of Lincoln.
She currently lives with her partner and their pet tiger in Halifax, sharing
their space with several fairies, a few thousand comic books, more clothes than
a theatre company would own and enough DVDs to schedule their own TV station.
In her spare time she enjoys shopping for yet more clothes, spends too much
time on Facebook and works with her partner on making their house into their
home.
